In law school he clerked for a private firm, served as a legal writing teaching assistant and was student articles editor of the Southern Illinois University Law Journal.

After law school Mike opened his own practice in southern Illinois, handling business law, real estate, estate planning, municipal law and civil litigation. In 1995 the Governor asked him to join his Senior Staff, where he served until the Governor's retirement in January 1999, overseeing the Governor's schedule, briefings, advance team and travel and serving as liaison with local officials in 96 of Illinois's 102 counties.

From 1999 to 2002 Mike served on the Illinois State Labor Relations Board and the Local Labor Relations Board, and for a time in 1999 he chaired both.

Mike's practice today concentrates on residential and commercial real estate, business and corporate law, estate planning and probate.
